How can you tell the difference between different iphones?

Q. So i've been told these are the different iphones at the moment

#2 iPhone 3G
#3 iPhone 3GS

How do you know the difference between 1-3 i know what iphone 4 looks like just how do you know the difference between the other ones?

Q. hi i am from turkey and i will be in ventura between 26th-30th november . i am planning to buy 3 iphone 4s . the problem is that can i just walk into an apple store and get an iphone 4s unlocked ? or do i need to reserve it and wait ?
