Is a leather case or a hardshell case a better scratch resistant product for the iphone 3g?

Q. I really like hard shell cases but so many people complain most still stratch there iphones, any suggestions that would be good i do like the look of the ivyskin products, but it seems leather cases are the best protection from scratches, I'm confused?
I want maximum protection from scratches for my iphone thats what im really getting at it doesnt matter what kind of case it is.

What is a good iphone 4 accessory for someone who is not technologically inclined?

Q. I never used an iphone. Out of principal i stay away from the things; but i'm purchasing a gift, and need to expertise with the iphone market.

The receiver isn't really familar with technology. So something that will help their use of the iphone.
bluetooth headsets, large battery pack, leather cases are pretty much out of the question.
What other suggestions do you have?

A. How about an iTunes gift card, so that they can download some music or apps.

Or if you're on a lower budget, maybe a Bumper or Dock from Apple (other cheaper ones are also available).

Or if your budget is lower still, a screen protector?
