How can i know whether the used iPhone 3gs I am about to buy is factory unlocked?

Q. i want to buy a used iPhone (almost new). and i was told that some used iPhones are originally locked but unlocked by an application called jailbreak (or something like that)

the question is:
How can i know whether the phone im buying is factory unlocked or unlocked by that software?

and another question:

what is the disadvantages of an iPhone that is unlocked by that application?

thank you,

A. iPhones that are jailbroken and unlocked will be un-jailbroken and re-locked by connecting to iTunes and upgrading the firmware. A factory unlocked iPhone is not jailbroken and updating the firmware will not lock it.

Factory unlocked iPhones have never been sold in the US. They are available in some European countries and they are enormously expensive - think $1,500. Unless the price of the phone reflects the reality of a factory unlocked iPhone, it's been jailbroken and unlocked. Such phones are not the best idea right now because Apple has released OS 3.1.3 which you will be prompted to install each time you access iTunes. Once installed, the phone cannot be unlocked (possibly ever).

If you are planning on using the phone with T-Mobile, I'd advise you to wait until the new iPhone is released this summer together with OS 4.0 and see what the iPhone hacker community comes up with for all iPhones.

how much would a used iPhone 3G sell for?
Q. i have a used iPhone 3G 8GB. there isn't anything wrong with it, it's battery life is still good, & it's software is up-to-date, i just want to sell it & buy the new iPhone 4G.
what would i get if i sold it to an apple store, & what would be a fair price if i were to sell it directly to another person?

A. You should check the craigslist posts in your area selling the iPhone 3G and see how much other people are selling it for.

Can I get a used iPhone 4S instead of my current phone?
Q. So my birthday is coming up and I was going to ask for a used iPhone 4S. Would I be able to? I currently have a Samsung trender for sprint. It can download apps and has Internet but its a crappy touchscreen slider. It also has some sort if SD card (I think micro). Three others in my family already have smartphones and I think they have the unlimited data package. My question is could I get it, how much would it cost, and would it mess anything up?

A. I'm sure you can. In fact Sprint is selling a pre-owned iPhone 4S for $49.99. See the link in the source. You would pay for the cost of the phone (plus state sales tax), one time activation fee of $36, and the monthly bill, which starts at $79.99 + tax and fees.
