A. we have 2 iphones, an original one, and the 3gs from AT&T. We have a family talk plan with 450 minutes a month, and we pay about $110 a month after all the taxes.
$50 of that are unlimited data plans. $20 for the unlimited EDGE plan, and $30 for the unlimited 3G plan. They are not optional, and are required.
WE can rollover unused minutes each month, and have several thousand in the bank, but they expire after a year if you don't use them.

You're not forced to if you bought the iPhone elsewhere BUT if you're upgrading with the same company, you will more likely BE forced to get the data plan. (Now, I am no fan of contracts but an iPhone without a data plan is as useless as a car without engine)
