If you take it from at&t, the phone will be something like 150$, but you'ill be stuck with a 50$/month and up obligatory data plan for 2-3 years witch will result at a total of 1350-1950$
What i sugess you is bought it at a apple store. It's hard at the beginning, (something like 750$ i think) but then your iphone will be free of contract and will be unlocked. Then choose your plan. You can even go on prepaid (that's what i do). You'il pay for what you need. Suppose you only need unlimited txt msg @ 15$/month and you supposely want it for 3 year (you can stop whenever you want, but just to compare) It will cost you about 1110$-1290$.
Well you can even take no phone plan and have use it has a premium ipod touch.. It will cost you 750$.

A. we have 2 iphones, an original one, and the 3gs from AT&T. We have a family talk plan with 450 minutes a month, and we pay about $110 a month after all the taxes.
$50 of that are unlimited data plans. $20 for the unlimited EDGE plan, and $30 for the unlimited 3G plan. They are not optional, and are required.
WE can rollover unused minutes each month, and have several thousand in the bank, but they expire after a year if you don't use them.
