Can i buy a vodafone iphone and use it in the states?

A. the best option is buy unlocked iphone, you can ask the vodafone will they unlock your iphone since you would like to use it in US usually they ask for some charges (but this is the best option because your iphone will be unlock legally and last forever)
Unlocked iPhone means you can use any carrier you want so if the vodafone can unlock your iphone then YES you can use your iphone in US with any carrier you want.
But if you can't get unlocked iphone, you can unlock it using service available in the internet.
but this is unofficial unlock, and can be lock again when apple release the new firmware.

if you buy your iphone and its already has firmware at 3.1.3, you can't unlock it
if you buy 3Gs and the iphone model has MC code in it, you can't unlock it
so the best option is asking the vodafone to officially unlock your iphone, but if you can't get it do unofficially unlock but make sure you not on 3.1.3 firmware or buy 3Gs with MC code models.
