What is the little grey dot in the top right corner of the ipod touch?

Q. When you look at it look at the top right corner, it is this little grey-ish black dot type thing. I have a leather case for my IPOD TOUCH [its not an iphone case] and it has a cutout for it too, i was wondering why there was a cutout there and then oneday I was out in the sun and noticed the dot there. So what is it? Why is it there?
