How can i know whether the used iPhone 3gs I am about to buy is factory unlocked?

Q. i want to buy a used iPhone (almost new). and i was told that some used iPhones are originally locked but unlocked by an application called jailbreak (or something like that)

the question is:
How can i know whether the phone im buying is factory unlocked or unlocked by that software?

and another question:

what is the disadvantages of an iPhone that is unlocked by that application?

thank you,

A. iPhones that are jailbroken and unlocked will be un-jailbroken and re-locked by connecting to iTunes and upgrading the firmware. A factory unlocked iPhone is not jailbroken and updating the firmware will not lock it.

Factory unlocked iPhones have never been sold in the US. They are available in some European countries and they are enormously expensive - think $1,500. Unless the price of the phone reflects the reality of a factory unlocked iPhone, it's been jailbroken and unlocked. Such phones are not the best idea right now because Apple has released OS 3.1.3 which you will be prompted to install each time you access iTunes. Once installed, the phone cannot be unlocked (possibly ever).

If you are planning on using the phone with T-Mobile, I'd advise you to wait until the new iPhone is released this summer together with OS 4.0 and see what the iPhone hacker community comes up with for all iPhones.

Question for anyone who has bought a USED Iphone?
Q. I have ATT and want to buy a used Iphone from someone on craigslist but the Iphone doesnt use SIM cards, how can i use it if i buy a used one? Anyone done this before?

A. the iphone does use a sim card. an att one.

How much would a used iPhone 4 cost after Christmas?
Q. I'm planning on buying a used iPhone 4 from craigslist or eBay after Christmas using the money I'll get. About how much should I expect to spend?

A. Well, considering you could get a new 16 gig now for $99 with a new 2 year contract, you shouldn't expect to pay much more than this for a used one even after Christmas. iPhones really don't loose their value on their own. Apple pretty much controls the current price of all phones with their current offerings. If I was you, I would not pay more than $110 for a used iphone 4 16 gig.
