Q. I have had at&t for years, and have been eligible for an upgrade for a few months now. I have had a contract with them for the past few years, and continue to use the company. A. For the iPhone you have to take in consideration a couple of things.
You're not forced to if you bought the iPhone elsewhere BUT if you're upgrading with the same company, you will more likely BE forced to get the data plan. (Now, I am no fan of contracts but an iPhone without a data plan is as useless as a car without engine)

16GB= $ 299
Refurbished iPhones:
8GB= $ 99
