A. The point of jailbreaking your Iphone is to be able to use apps that apple will NEVER put on the apps store. It isn't about getting around having to pay for apps. It also voids your warranty. If your goal is to use cool apps you can't get from the app store and customize your Iphone then it is one way to go. A. No, Smartphones need data.....If you want it to work at least. An iPhone without data would be completely useless.

So, yeah. Go for it, don't listen to anyone calling you a pirate for wanting free apps, as jailbreaking DOES NOT do that. (and also, as long as you copy the app file from your computer to your iTunes app library, it'll sync and such. No jailbreak needed. Such that ;) lol)
